Important qualities every good CEO should have

It doesn’t matter if you are the young founder of a startup or the head of a multinational company. The important qualities of a great CEO don’t change no matter the size of the company. Here are the top five skills that you should develop if you want to get to (and stay) at the top.

1. Strong communication skills
First and foremost a successful CEO always listens to his employees, and that includes the cleaner, the marketing manager and the board members. Listening to others may be one of the best ways to find out how to keep your company going from strength to strength.

2. Build relationships
Always take the time to make people feel important. You never know where the next great idea will come from and by supporting and valuing the work of your employees you will see unlimited dividends. A CEO has the responsibility of representing the company, and it is often the alliances that CEOs make that determine the success of business deals.

3. Be accessible
Don’t lock yourself away in an ivory tower. Some of the best CEOs have always kept themselves available. It is the best way to defeat the arrogance that often (sadly) comes with power. By holding the door open for your detractors as well as your supporters, you are creating an open space to keep yourself (and your company) growing in the right direction.

4. Set an inspiring example
As a CEO it is good to reverse the old adage: do as I say; not as I do. You want people to emulate what you DO. It is essential that you embody the ethics of your company and provide a good role model for those who come after you. You are helping to prepare the next generation to take on more critical roles in the workplace.

5. Think outside of box
The most successful CEOs have always been those creative thinkers who know how to break the norms and take (calculated) risks. Remember – the CEO is the person who everyone comes to when no one else can find the solution to the trickiest of problems.
